Common questions

Which canvas should I use?

The Business Model Canvas when you want to see how a whole business works — partners, resources, customers and money — and what changes if one part changes. The Lean Canvas when an idea is still uncertain: it puts the problem, the simplest solution and the numbers that show progress first.

Who created these frameworks, and can I share these files?

The Business Model Canvas was designed by Strategyzer AG; Lean Canvas, adapted from it, was created by Ash Maurya (LEANSTACK). Both are published under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 licence. These versions keep that attribution on every page and are shared under the same licence, so you may share and adapt them as long as you keep the notice and the same licence.

Does a filled-in canvas prove the idea works?

No. It organises what you believe. Mark anything unchecked “to test”, add it to the testing sheet with the evidence you already have, and plan a small test. The example invents no interviews, conversion rates or demand figures.

What if I need more space than a canvas box?

Write short phrases on the canvas and use the longer-notes sheet in the guide for the detail.

Which apps do the files open in?

Word files open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages and LibreOffice; the PDFs print as they are. We checked them in LibreOffice only.
