The model

Monthly rate r = nominal annual rate ÷ 12Monthly payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n) (P ÷ n when the rate is 0%)Interest each month = remaining balance × r; principal = payment − interestTotal borrowing cost = total interest + upfront fee

P is the amount borrowed and n the number of monthly payments. Payments are made at the end of each month, the rate is fixed, and the loan is fully repaid at the end of the term. Amounts are rounded to the cent; the final payment absorbs any rounding difference.

Worked example

Borrow 25,000 at 7.5% a year over 60 months. The monthly rate is 7.5% ÷ 12 = 0.625%, and the payment is 500.95. Over five years you repay about 30,057 — roughly 5,057 of interest. With a 250 arrangement fee paid upfront, the total borrowing cost under these assumptions is about 5,307.

An interest-free 12,000 over 12 months is simply 1,000 a month, with no interest.

Common questions

Is the rate I enter an APR?

No. Enter the nominal annual interest rate from the loan offer; the calculator divides it by 12 each month. An APR is a standardised figure that also reflects fees and timing, calculated by rules that differ between countries, so this page does not produce one.

Why is the last payment slightly different?

Payments and each month’s interest are rounded to the cent. Over many months those fractions add up to a few cents, so the final payment is adjusted to repay the loan exactly. The schedule marks it.

How do I include an arrangement fee?

If you pay it yourself at the start, enter it as the upfront fee: it is shown separately and added to the total borrowing cost. If the lender adds it to the loan, include it in the amount borrowed instead, because you then pay interest on it.

Why does my lender’s schedule differ by a few cents?

Lenders may charge interest by the day, use a different rounding rule, or take the first payment on a different date. This calculator uses one-twelfth of the annual rate each month, with payments at month end.

Can it show overpayments or a balloon payment?

Not in this version. It covers a fixed-rate loan repaid in equal monthly payments over the full term.

Is anything saved or sent?

No. The calculation runs in your browser; the schedule downloads as a file on your device.
