The formula
Reviews needed = N × (T − C) ÷ (R − T)N is your current number of reviews, C the current average, R the rating of each new review, and T the average you need. Because ratings are shown to one decimal, T is your target minus 0.05: a 4.55 average displays as 4.6.
Worked example
You have 120 reviews showing 4.3 and want to show 4.6, assuming new reviews are 5★. You need a true average of 4.55.
If your true average is exactly 4.30: 120 × (4.55 − 4.30) ÷ (5 − 4.55) = 66.7, so 67 reviews. Because a shown 4.3 can be anything from 4.25 to just under 4.35, the honest answer without your exact average is 54 to 80 reviews.
What the result means — and what it does not
- It assumes every new review has the rating you entered. Real reviews vary, so treat the result as a minimum if 5★ is optimistic.
- Some platforms weight or filter reviews, or cut decimals instead of rounding; their shown rating may not follow a simple average.
- Asking every customer for a review is fine; offering rewards for positive reviews breaks most platforms’ rules.
Common questions
Why do I get a range instead of one number?
Platforms show your rating rounded to one decimal. A shown 4.3 might really be 4.26 or 4.34, and from 120 reviews that difference changes the answer by more than twenty reviews. If you can add up your stars (total stars ÷ number of reviews), enter the exact average to get one number.
Why is my target “not reachable”?
An average can only move towards the reviews you add. If new reviews are 4★, the average can approach 4 but never pass it, so a target of 4.5 is out of reach unless future reviews are better than that.
Can I reach a shown 5.0?
Only if the true average reaches 4.95, which needs nearly all reviews to be 5★. With many existing reviews below 5, it can take a very large number of new 5★ reviews.
