The traffic needed formula

Customers needed = Revenue goal ÷ Average customer valueVisitors needed = Customers needed ÷ Conversion rate

Example calculation

Your goal is $50,000, your average customer is worth $100, and your site converts at 2%. You need 50,000 ÷ 100 = 500customers, and 500 ÷ 0.02 = 25,000 visitors.

What this calculator tells you

This connects three numbers most owners keep separate: revenue, customer value and conversion. It shows whether your goal is realistic at your current performance — and where the pressure really sits.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming traffic alone drives revenue, ignoring conversion and value.
  • Using an optimistic conversion rate you have never actually hit.
  • Planning for total visitors without breaking it into a daily pace.

When this number is misleading

It assumes your conversion rate and customer value stay flat as traffic scales — but cheap, cold traffic usually converts worse than your current visitors. The real visitor requirement is often higher than the tidy math suggests. Treat the result as a floor, and lean on conversion and offer improvements rather than volume alone.

How to improve the picture

  • Raise conversion rate so each visitor is worth more.
  • Increase average customer value with upsells and better offers.
  • Prioritise higher-intent traffic over sheer volume.
  • Improve the landing experience before buying more clicks.

The number tells you where you are. Not what to do next.

Knowing the target traffic is one thing — a plan to reach it is another.

Common questions

How do I work out how much traffic I need?

Divide your revenue goal by your average customer value to get the customers you need, then divide that by your conversion rate to get the visitors required. This calculator does both steps for you.

What conversion rate should I use?

Use your own real rate if you have it — visitors who become customers. If you do not, a cautious estimate of 1–2% is common for many small business websites, but your actual number is always better.

The traffic number looks impossible. What now?

That is useful information. If the required visitors are unrealistic, the fix is usually a higher average customer value, a better conversion rate, or a stronger offer — not simply buying more traffic.

Does more traffic always mean more revenue?

No. Traffic only turns into revenue at your conversion rate and customer value. Doubling low-quality traffic without improving conversion often just doubles your costs, not your sales.

Is this only for ecommerce?

No. Any business with a website and a typical sale value can use it — services, local businesses, agencies and more. Just use the average value of a customer rather than an order.
