Writing steps people can follow

  • One action per step, in the order it is done.
  • A check for every step that says what to look at: a code, a count, a weight, a word-for-word match.
  • For each thing that can go wrong, what to do and who to tell, and how quickly.

Common questions

What makes a good quality check?

Something another person could see, count or compare. “The code on each item matches the packing slip” or “weight within 50 g of the label” can be checked; “ensure quality” cannot.

Can I use it for safety-critical or regulated work?

No. It is for ordinary business tasks. Work involving chemicals, electricity, food safety, medical care, working at height or other regulated activities needs procedures based on the rules that apply to you.

How often should a procedure be reviewed?

Whenever the task changes, and on the review date you set. The change history records what changed, when and who approved it.
